Began his playing career with junior teams, Paddington FC and remained with Chapel Boys FC for three years before joining West Ham United FC as a trainee and attended the FA National School of Excellence at Lilleshall for two years. Signed professionally on 11 December 1998 and went on to play 126 Premier League games, scoring ten goals. Towards the end of the following season, Manchester United FC were keen to sign him. He did however, leave the Hammers for Chelsea FC for £6.6 million on 6 August 2003, making 183 Premier League appearances, scoring 27. His contract expired on 30 June 2010 and was not renewed. So he then joined Liverpool FC on 19 July 2010 on a four-year contract. However, on transfer deadline day, 31 August 2011, Cole joined French club Lille, on a season-long loan deal, making 32 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring four goals. He returned to Liverpool for the 2012-13 season and completed his Red's tally of 26 Premier League appearances and three goals before being allowed to return to West Ham United FC on a free transfer on 5 January 2013 on an eighteen month contract. He made 31 Premier League appearances, scoring five goals. His contract once more expired. He joined Aston Villa FC on 10 June 2014 on a two-year contract, he made twelve Premier League appearances, scoring once. He was allowed to join Coventry City FC as an emergency loanee on 16 October 2015, joining permanently on 7 January 2016. On 4 May 2016, Cole confirmed he was to join NASL side Tampa Bay Rowdies, at the season's ending.
